Working Here
Long Harbour has a long history in industrial development, both in the community and throughout the western Avalon region.
- Long Harbour was the location of ERCO's elemental phosphorous plant, and helped provide the plant's labour force for more than 20 years
- The western Avalon region was the source of more than 5,000 skilled workers during the construction of the Hibernia oil production platform in nearby Bull Arm
- The region continues to provide most of the 600-700 person work force at the North Atlantic Petroleum oil refinery in nearby Come By Chance
Long Harbour has been selected by Vale Inco as the location for a commercial nickel processing plant. Construction is scheduled to start in April of 2009 and operations to begin in 2012/13. This processing plant will be a major economic driver in the region, and is anticipated to generate significant business opportunities. The LHDC will be working to identify the specific types of services and products that will be required during construction and operation, and to identify and communicate business opportunities to qualified firms.
